The Wurlitzer Co., one of the largest makers of musical instruments in the US, once had a primary manufacturing location in DeKalb, Ill.

Now the DeKalb County Community Foundation, which was established in 1940s, is one of the largest funders of music education in the Chicago area.

This spring, the foundation awarded $127,506 in Wurlitzer Foundation Fund grants to 28 nonprofit and public sector organizations in DeKalb County and throughout the greater Chicago area, the Daily Herald reports.

"The impact of this grant funding is extremely significant," Cor Cantiamo founder Eric Johnson says in a news release.

"Without this support, Cor Cantiamo could not achieve our educational outreach mission."

Northern Illinois University, Northern Public Radio, and the Sandwich Opera House were among the recipients.
